Project Overview
The University of Cincinnati Academic Health Center, seeking to enhance and improve the quality of health by developing and applying knowledge in the health sciences, is in the midst of an ambitious renovation and expansion of the Medical Sciences Building (MSB).
Consisting of five phases, the project will provide new collaboration space, add the latest technology and create state-of-the-art research and educational space.
Phase I—with groundbreaking in October 2004—saw the construction of the Center for Academic and Research Excellence (CARE)/Crawley Building, which is connected to the MSB via a glass atrium. Officially opened in September 2008, the CARE/Crawley Building houses some of the most technically advanced laboratory research and teaching space in the nation. It is named for Edith Crawley, a UC alumna who bequeathed $12 million to the Academic Health Center to bolster research into eye disease for older adults and to support medical students and professionals dedicated to eye research.
The MSB-CARE/Crawley Building is one of the largest health-science research complexes in the country, a highly visible gateway inviting visitors into the university's scientific corridor.

Advanced Interdisciplinary Learning
The MSB complex is truly interdisciplinary, a place of opportunity for innovations in scientific discovery and education. Home to the College of Medicine, it houses over 20 research departments.
Offering amenities intended to foster collaboration, the complex includes areas where scientists and students can interact outside the lab or classroom. A fitness center, breakout areas, lounges, bookstore and a naturally lit atrium all serve to elevate the humanistic elements in research and education.
State-of-the-Art Laboratories
The MSB-CARE/Crawley Building project creates a new and exciting entrance to the MSB through the atrium, as well as housing six floors of laboratories to be used by graduate students, faculty and researchers. A high degree of flexibility has been designed in so that all labs can easily adapt to new science and technology for years to come.
New Health Sciences Library
The existing medical library received a significant upgrade and a new name: the Donald C. Harrison Health Sciences Library, named for Donald Harrison, MD, senior vice president and provost for health affairs, 1986-2002. It has multiple floors interconnected with floor openings and stairs, providing areas for students to interact. The floors are also open into the atrium, creating a sense of openness and spaciousness. Large areas have been developed as meeting and group study rooms of various sizes.
The library also houses the Henry R. Winkler Center for the Health Professions, named in honor of the president emeritus of UC and former chair of the center's advisory board. Founded in 1974, the center is a collection of rare books on the history of medicine; archives of internationally prominent medical figures, including Albert Sabin, MD; and historic photographs, oral histories, medical artifacts and medical instruments.
Design Team
The University of Cincinnati hired Harley Ellis Devereaux to plan, manage and implement this comprehensive building program. Specializing in the design of advanced science, research and teaching facilities, Harley Ellis Devereaux has provided scientific and research institutions across the country with over 10 million square feet of research space over the past 10 years.
As signature design architect, the San Francisco-based firm STUDIOS Architecture was retained to program, plan and design the new research facility in collaboration with Harley Ellis Devereaux. The lead designer was STUDIOS principal Erik Sueberkrop, a UC alumnus.
GPR Planners Collaborative Inc., a leader in laboratory design, created state-of-the-art labs in the CARE/Crawley Building.
Other members of the design team include Affiliated Engineers, for mechanical and electrical engineering, and Hargreaves Associates, authors of the campus master plan, for landscape planning and design.
The new MSB is a model for sustainable design in architecture. The United States Green Building Council LEED scorecard rating system will be used to rate the project’s level of sustainability.
